Eczema

🌿 Let’s Talk About Eczema – Beyond Just Dry Skin!

Hello everyone! I’m Dr. Subha 🌸

Today, let’s explore something that many silently suffer with — Eczema. It’s more than “just itching” — it’s a journey of skin, stress, immunity, and even digestion. Ready? Let’s dive in — the Ayurvedic and scientific way!

🌾 What is Eczema?

Eczema (also called Atopic Dermatitis) is a chronic skin condition that causes itchy, dry, inflamed, and sometimes cracked or oozing skin. It comes and goes in flares and can deeply affect daily life and confidence.

Interactive Check-In:

Have you or someone close to you experienced:

✔️ Constant itchy patches?

✔️ Redness or cracked skin behind ears, in folds, or on hands?

✔️ Sensitive, allergy-prone skin?

If yes, let’s understand why it happens.

πŸ” Why Does Eczema Happen?

🌿 In Ayurveda:

Eczema is known as “Vicharchika”, a type of Kushta roga (skin disorder).

πŸ‘‰ It's mainly due to the vitiation of all three Doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha – but Kapha and Pitta are often dominant.

Dosha Effect on Skin

Vata Dryness, cracking

Pitta Redness, burning

Kapha Oozing, thick patches

πŸ“Œ Root Causes in Ayurveda:

Poor digestion (Mandagni) → leads to Ama (toxins)

Excessive intake of incompatible foods (Viruddha Ahara) like curd with fish

Suppression of natural urges

Emotional stress

Wrong skincare practices

🧬 In Modern Science:

It's considered an autoimmune & inflammatory condition.

Triggered by genetics + environment.

Skin barrier becomes weak → allergens enter → immune system overreacts → inflammation.

Common Triggers:

Soaps, detergents

Cold/hot weather

Dust, pollen, pet dander

Emotional stress

Certain foods (milk, gluten, nuts)

🌦️ What Eczema Looks Like (Symptoms)

πŸ‘Ά In babies: cheeks, scalp, diaper area

πŸ‘¦ In kids: behind knees, elbows, neck

πŸ§‘‍🦰 In adults: hands, feet, eyelids, wrists

Symptoms:

Severe itching (worse at night)

Redness, burning

Dry, scaly, or thickened skin

Sometimes watery discharge or pus if infected

🧘 How to Manage Eczema?

🌱 Ayurvedic Approach

✅ Shodhana (Cleansing):

Virechana (Purgation) — for Pitta-dominant eczema

Raktamokshana — bloodletting therapy

Kashaya dhara — herbal decoction pouring

✅ Shamana (Pacifying) Therapies:

Internal medications: Gandhaka Rasayana, Arogyavardhini, Khadirarishta, Mahatiktaka Ghrita

External: Eladi choornam lepa, Nalpamaradi oil, Manjisthadi tailam

✅ Diet – Pathya & Apathya:

Favor Avoid

Green moong, old rice, ghee Curd, seafood, fermented food

Bitter veggies (neem, bitter gourd) Milk + sour fruit

Warm water Cold water

✅ Stress Management:

Use Nasya, Shirodhara, and meditation — stress is a major trigger!

🧴 Modern Care Tips

✔️ Use fragrance-free moisturizers (like petroleum jelly or ceramide-based creams)

✔️ Bathe in lukewarm water, not hot

✔️ Pat-dry gently and apply moisturizer within 3 minutes

✔️ Use hypoallergenic laundry detergent

✔️ Keep nails trimmed — scratching worsens it

✔️ Wear cotton clothes, avoid wool/synthetic

✔️ Shorten bath times (5-10 mins max)

🍽️ Food to Heal Your Skin

🌿 Anti-inflammatory Diet:

Flax seeds, turmeric, aloe vera

Omega-3 (from walnuts or flax)

Steamed veggies and fruits

A2 cow’s ghee (moderately)

🚫 Avoid:

Spicy, fermented, junk foods

Cold, stale, or leftover food

Artificial sugar & soda

❤️ Let’s Not Forget Emotions!

Did you know? Stress and emotions directly influence eczema.

Cortisol (stress hormone) can trigger flare-ups.

That’s why Ayurveda insists on mind-body balance.

πŸ‘‰ Daily practices:

Deep breathing

Journaling skin triggers

Avoid overthinking, overstimulation

πŸ§ͺ Eczema is Not Contagious!

Please remember — eczema is NOT infectious. It’s an internal imbalance showing up on your skin. Show compassion if someone you know has it.

🌸 Final Thoughts from Dr. Subha

Eczema is not just a skin issue – it’s a reflection of deeper immune, digestive, and emotional imbalance. Ayurveda offers a powerful, root-cause approach that nourishes the skin and the soul. πŸ’š

Take care of your skin like you would a child – gently, mindfully, and consistently.
