  • women age above 35 years 
  • history of congenital anomalies 
  • history of recurrent abortion 
  • family history of neural tube defects 
  • history of diabetics and exposure to certain drugs and the environmental agents 
  • belongings of ethnic group at high risk 
  • ultrasound detection of structural defect
